The global technology outage caused by CrowdStrike’s faulty update is estimated to cost US Fortune 500 companies $5.4 billion, according to insurers. CrowdStrike has committed to implementing changes to prevent a recurrence. The projected losses do not include Microsoft, which also experienced widespread system failures due to the crash. Insurer Parametrix indicates that companies in banking, healthcare, and major airlines will be most affected. The total insured losses for non-Microsoft Fortune 500 companies are estimated between $540 million and $1.08 billion.

Various industries continue to address the damage from CrowdStrike’s outage, which grounded thousands of flights, disrupted hospital operations, and crashed payment systems, marking it as the largest IT failure in history. This incident highlighted the fragility of modern tech systems, where a single update with faulty code can disrupt global operations.

CrowdStrike, a Texas-based cybersecurity firm, has seen a 22% drop in stock market value since the outage. The company has apologized for the crisis and released a report detailing the update failure. The primary issue was a bug in an update to its Falcon platform, designed to protect businesses from cyber-attacks and disruptions, which led to the crash of 8.5 million Windows machines. In its postmortem, CrowdStrike announced plans to enhance software testing and gradually roll out updates to prevent widespread failures.
