As part of its strategy to catch up with leaders in EV technology, Toyota is preparing to introduce its first electric vehicle equipped with an advanced self-driving system. GAC Toyota, a joint venture between Toyota Motor and Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), announced that it will launch an EV with capabilities similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system next year in China.

GAC Toyota's strategic collaborations and upcoming models

GAC Toyota revealed that the new Bozhi 3X SUV will be the first model to feature this advanced self-driving technology. This system, developed in partnership with Beijing-based autonomous vehicle startup Momenta, will offer features like road navigation, obstacle avoidance, and automated parking.

Additionally, GAC Toyota is collaborating with Huawei to integrate its technology into the upcoming bZ3X electric sedan, further strengthening its position in the competitive EV market.

Toyota's broader strategy and future plans

In response to a 22% drop in car sales in China during the first four months of 2024, Toyota is focusing on revitalizing its brand by introducing cutting-edge technology. This includes a new iron phosphate lithium battery expected by 2027, which could reduce production costs by 40% compared to the current bZ4X. Additionally, Toyota plans to open its previously exclusive Lexus charging stations in Japan to other EVs, aiming to defend against growing competition from low-cost Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD.
