Starlink upgrades in-flight internet

United Airlines has announced a major upgrade to its in-flight internet service. Starting in 2025, the airline will roll out SpaceX's Starlink satellite-based Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, offering passengers faster, more reliable internet access for free. This shift is set to change the in-flight experience for passengers, making it easier to stay connected and enjoy a more smoother online experience while traveling.

In-flight connectivity has evolved significantly over the years. Two decades ago, power outlets were rare, and Wi-Fi was slow and expensive. While air-to-ground systems introduced in 2008 made internet access possible, they often fell short in terms of performance. The introduction of satellite-based internet improved the experience, allowing for streaming and stable connections.

Starlink entered the aviation market in 2022, initially serving smaller aircraft before expanding to commercial airlines. United will begin testing Starlink equipment in early 2025, offering gate-to-gate service that supports streaming and multiple connected devices - all at no cost to passengers.

Although the rollout will take time, as it involves installing the systems on over 1,000 aircraft, this partnership marks a significant advancement in in-flight connectivity, underscoring the importance of reliable internet access for travelers.
